- Fishing at the Green Lagoon -

The Green Lagoon is a small chalk pit controlled by Letchworth Garden
City Angling Association. The Green Lagoon can be fished on a day ticket and is all year fishing. Note - the Blue Lagoon is strictly members only.

A brief history, and description curtessee of the information on the  Letchworth Garden City Angling Association Ltd website May 2007;

The pit was dug by hand; using crowbars, sledgehammers and shovels. The chalk was then ferried by trucks on a small track down to a kiln at the Arlesey Brickworks on the opposite side of Hitchin road where it was burnt down to make cement. This work ceased around the turn of the 20th century and moved to the site of the Blue Lagoon.

The Green is triangular in shape and about 3 acres in size. The northern end has a shear chalk cliff dropping away to a maximum depth of 30 feet and is the deepest side. The eastern side is the shallowest but still around 12 feet under the rod tip, the western side is between 14 and 16 feet under the rod tip. The middle is the deepest at 35 feet. The area is completely surrounded by trees, which offer shelter even in the most stormy of conditions. The water also holds its temperature, so the fish continue to feed during the winter and become increasingly active a lot sooner than on other waters as spring approaches. It’s quite amazing to stand at ‘Magic corner’ (where the east bank meets the west bank) and watch all the species congregate here in early spring to spawn.

There are Carp of all types in the Green Lagoon, Mirror, Common and Leather. Most of the Carp are in the upper teens but plenty of twenties are caught, best so far this season is a Leather of 25 lb. Pike to 30 lbs, Tench to 7 lbs, Bream to 8 lbs. There is also a large head of skimmers, Rudd and Roach, big Perch and the occasional Crusian carp. This lake has probably started more local lads into fishing than any other lake.

Prices:
EA Rod Licenses from post offices per adult; £24.50 for the season; daily £3.25; weekly £8.75; also available on line at the EAs website.

Day Tickets from the waterside bailiff per adult 2006/7 season £7.00

LGCAA ltd Membership per adult £58.00

Season Supplement to fish this Lagoon per adult and from Thompson Tackle, Arlesey (01462 - 835 269) £17.00

Finally:
Please respect all that LGCAA are doing for this beauty spot; take all your litter/discarded tackle home; even take a spare bag for the litter/tackle left by others. After all our houses are only a few yards away and the wild life and countryside, I’m sure, is important to all of us.

If you walk your dog at this location please also clear up after your pet; we will endeavour to have a dog bin sited at the top of Connelly Lane for this purpose.
